Tanja completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of Adelaide and completed her degree in 1994. In 1995 she completed her Honours degree in genetics. Her studies then brought her to Perth where she completed her Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1999. Since graduating, Tanja has worked in regional centres in Victoria, Northern Territory and South Australia. Tanja returned to Adelaide in 2004 to start her family.
